Qatari-funded fuel enters Gaza via Abu Salem crossing

Tuesday 9-October-2018

The first shipment of Qatari-funded fuel entered the besieged Gaza Strip on Tuesday afternoon via the Kerem Abu Salem border crossing the PIC reporter said.

Well-informed sources told the PIC reporter that a total six truckloads are expected to enter the Gaza Strip on Tuesday for Gaza’s only power plant.

The fuel was entered in a Qatari- and UN.-backed effort to solve the power crisis in the Strip which was deepened due to the PA’s imposed sanctions the sources added.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) objected on the Qatari move while the UN has appreciated the Qatari contribution.

“The Secretary-General expresses his deep appreciation to the Government of Qatar for its $60 million contribution which made this delivery possible and will allow its continuation for the coming months” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in New York.

A Qatari official speaking to Reuters said Doha planned to help with Gaza’s power crisis “at the request of donor states in the United Nations to prevent an escalation of the existing humanitarian disaster”.
