Hamdallah asks donors not to aid Gaza save through his gov’t

Tuesday 31-July-2018

Palestinian minister of labor Ma’moun Abu Shahla said that premier Rami al-Hamdallah had informed donor countries and their representatives in Palestine that any economic aid for the Gaza Strip must be provided through the legitimate ministries of the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Abu Shahla told a local radio station that “there is only one government in Palestine responsible for the West Bank and Gaza which is the national consensus government.”

“There is a lot of talk going on about humanitarian aid and development of humanitarian issues in Gaza but the Palestinian cause is not an issue of aid” he said.

“The government is doing its duties towards our people in the sectors of electricity water education and health; therefore there should be no foreign interventions in these fields except through the relevant ministries of the government” the minister claimed.

PA president Mahmoud Abbas who controls the government of Rami al-Hamdallah has slapped sanctions on impoverished Gaza since April 2017 claiming at the time that his measures were aimed at forcing Hamas to disband its caretaker administrative committee in Gaza.

However Abbas escalated the sanctions on Gaza after Hamas agreed to dissolve its committee as part of the Cairo talks with PA officials in September 2017.
