”UNRWA My Right Until We Return” campaign on Saturday said that UNRWA is planning to lay off dozens of its employees in Lebanon.
Quoting a “senior official” who spoke on condition of anonymity the campaign said that most of the dismissed employees will be from the education sector.
He said that extensive discussions have been held recently with the participation of foreign officials who came to Beirut specially to discuss priorities in this matter.
He pointed out that of the 3000 UNRWA employees in Lebanon there are 2000 employees in education programs. “With many schools merged together at least 100 employees can be laid off” he added.
These reports carry unpleasant news for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon who live in the poorest refugee camps compared to other areas where UNRWA operates with an unemployment rate of 65%.
