Guterres confirms opposition to US embassy transfer

Wednesday 9-May-2018

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday confirmed his opposition to the planned move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Occupied Jerusalem next week.

His spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said during a press conference that Guterres is against this unilateral move by the US adding “He has expressed this in many occasions before and his position has not changed.”

He continued to say that the Secretary-General respects the sovereign rights of the UN Members State.

Washington is planning to move its embassy to Jerusalem on 14th May on the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Israel on the occupied Palestinian territories in 1948.

Widespread criticism and warnings of the possible repercussions of the embassy transfer have been witnessed since the move was announced given the security situation in the Middle East.

US president Donald Trump on 6th December 2017 recognized Jerusalem with its eastern and western parts as the capital of Israel and announced his intention to move his country’s embassy in Israel to the holy city.

The international community does not accept Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem since 1967 nor recognize its annexation in 1980.
