Jordan to okay new Israeli ambassador to Amman

Sunday 11-March-2018

The Jordanian government is mulling over approving the newly appointed Israeli ambassador to Amman drawing to a close a diplomatic spat between the two sides over a shooting incident at Israel’s embassy that left two Jordanians dead.

Jordanian newspaper Al Ghad reported on Sunday that Jordan is expected to accept Amir Weissbrod as Israel’s new ambassador to Jordan after his country submitted a request in this regard.

The former ambassador Einat Schlein was forced to step down and the Israeli embassy in Amman was closed in the wake of the diplomatic crisis. An investigation was launched by the Jordanian security authorities after an Israeli embassy guard killed two unarmed Jordanian citizens.

Jordan said that on July 23 2017 Mohamed Jawawdeh 17 was shot dead by a security guard at Israel’s embassy in Amman during a row over the late delivery of furniture by the victim.

A second Jordanian man who owned a building rented by the Israeli embassy Bashar Hamarneh was also killed during the brawl.

Later the security guard known as Ziv Moyal claimed at the time that upon discovering he was an Israeli Jawawdeh tried to stab him in the neck with a screwdriver.

The Jordanian leadership was enraged when Moyal received a hero’s welcome in Israel following a diplomatic standoff which saw the Israeli mission Amman closed and diplomats kicked out.

However the tension between the two sides eased earlier this year as Israel agreed to pay compensation to the Jordanian government.
