Jordan urges Israel to backtrack on Jerusalem churches move

Monday 26-February-2018

Jordan on Sunday condemned the Israeli occupation authorities’ decisions against Jerusalem churches and properties in violation of international law demanding Israel to immediately reverse its decisions.

Jordan’s government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani reiterated Jordan’s firm rejection of Israel’s systematic measures to change the historical and legal status quo east of Occupied Jerusalem’s holy sites including Islamic and Christian property and endowments.

The government spokesperson said these measures violate international and humanitarian laws and the defacto historical situation that has been upheld for many years in the holy city stressing that Churches have always been exempt from paying these taxes to the existing civil authorities in the city.

According to al-Momani these steps clearly target the historical Christian presence in Occupied Jerusalem which he said is part and parcel of the holy city’s history and its historical human religious and cultural heritage.

He called on Israel to immediately reverse the decisions taken against Jerusalem churches and to respect its obligations as an occupying power in Jerusalem in accordance with international law.

The Jordanian official warned of the serious fallouts of underway Israeli schemes to misappropriate church lands vowing that Jordan will do whatever it takes to thwart such attempts protect holy sites preserve the status quo in Occupied Jerusalem and boost Palestinians’ steadfastness.
