Palestinian girl recounts how her fiancé lost eyesight in Israeli jail

Sunday 28-January-2018

“I was racing against the clock speeding up my walking pace with each and every step as I hoped to see my fiancé in good health” said a young Palestinian lady as she sounded the alarm over her detained fiancé’s exacerbating health condition.

“I stood up from afar as I shook my hands back and forth to catch his attention. However I realized soon very soon that his health has just gone from bad to worse. My fiancé has just lost his sight” Mohamed’s fiancée Ala’a Aseida told the Palestinian Information Center with tears in her eyes.

Standing six meters away from her fiancée at the Israeli Salem military court Ala’a realized that Mohamed had failed to see her despite the close distance.

Mohamed has been diagnosed with sight disorders since November 2017. His condition has gone sharply downhill as a result of the medical negligence pursued by the Israeli prison administration against him.

“Mohamed had caught a virus; yet the Israeli prison authorities paid no heed” said Ala’a. “His health has remarkably exacerbated. My fiancé gets only routine checks at an Israeli prison clinic every two weeks. In his case check-ups have to be carried out by a specialist. His situation is far more complicated than to be worked out by standard checks.”

Ala’a asked the lawyer to bring Mohamed up close to her so as to talk to him wishing that her fiancé would see her from a closer ranger. “To my shock Mohamed could not figure out who was standing before him.”

Mohamed was kidnapped by the Israeli occupation forces just one week after he asked for Ala’a’s hand.

Ala’a said her fiancé’s family has repeatedly launched calls to allow him to undergo medical check-ups at West Bank hospitals.

“One year and four months have passed by since Mohamed and myself got engaged. I only saw him on a couple of occasions. At one fell swoop the Israeli occupation stole away my happiness from me” she said.

“The charges issued against my fiancé are just groundless and trivial. Should anyone on earth be sent to jail for expressing his mind on Facebook or for supporting an anti-occupation organization?” wondered Ala’a. “The Israeli prison authorities should seriously consider releasing him due to his deteriorating health.”

Ala’a called on the concerned human rights organizations and media institutions to urgently step in and take serious steps to urge the Israeli occupation to unshackle her fiancé from prison bars before it is too late.
