Barghouti criticizes Israel’s West Bank annexation move

Tuesday 2-January-2018

General Secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative Mustafa Barghouti on Monday asked the Palestinian Authority to take a stronger stand against Likud party’s decision to annex West Bank settlements to Israel.

In a statement on Monday Barghouti described the decision as “very dangerous” pointing out that it means that the Oslo Agreement has come to an end.

Barghouti chided the Palestinian Authority for its “weak reaction” to the Israeli move saying that the Palestinian National Council’s upcoming meeting is going to be a last chance for the Authority to establish an alternative strategy based mainly on achieving national unity.

The Palestinian official explained that this Israeli decision provides further evidence that negotiations have failed stressing that Palestinians should refer the settlement file to the International Criminal Court to hold the Israeli criminals led by Benjamin Netanyahu accountable for their crimes.

He pointed out that the US through its recent recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has given Israel the green light to take such steps.

Israel’s Likud party on Sunday approved by a majority vote a draft resolution providing for imposing Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank and Jerusalem settlements.

The vote was held during the general conference of the 3700-member Likud Central Committee and the resolution is expected to be passed to the Knesset for its approval.
