Khudari: Gaza’s monthly economic losses estimated at $70 million

Jamal al-Khudari head of the Popular Committee against the Siege has said that the direct and indirect monthly losses of the industrial and commercial sectors in the Gaza are estimated at $70 million.

In press remarks Khudari said such losses resulted from the siege and other crises and financial problems including the problem of unpaid salaries.

He described the reality of factories workshops and commercial stores in Gaza as “extremely difficult” after 3500 of them were closed during 14 years of blockade.

The head of the anti-siege group warned that “there is a daily closure of businesses factories and workshops in Gaza which means a significant increase in the number of unemployed workers and technicians in addition to large financial losses.”

He pointed out that the poverty rate in Gaza exceeded 85 percent and the unemployment rate exceeded 60 percent while the daily per capita income amounted to two dollars.
