Head of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haneyya has stressed the need for implementing the renewed understandings over Gaza by the Israeli side as soon as possible warning of negative results if there was any reluctance or delay in this regard.
Haneyya made his remarks during a telephone conversation on Friday with Nickolay Mladenov special UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process.
The two sides discussed the understandings over Gaza which were reached anew following efforts by Egyptian and UN mediators.
They talked about the March of Return rallies and the importance of maintaining calm on the border.
Haneyya highlighted the need for refraining from using armed force against the participants in border rallies.
The Hamas official expressed his appreciation for the efforts that had been made by the UN along with Egypt and Qatar to help Gaza.
The two sides agreed to be in touch regarding the recent understandings over Gaza.
The Israeli army radio last night announced a new agreement mediated by Egypt and the UN had been reached over Gaza.
Under this agreement the Israeli side pledged to re-expand the permissible fishing areas in Gaza waters and allow in withheld fuel shipments to the Gaza power plant.
According to Haaretz newspaper the agreement brokered by the UN and Egyptian mediators include the renewal of fuel supply to the Gaza Strip halted by Israel earlier this week.
Accordingly Israel said it would extend the zone allowed for fishing around Gaza to 15 nautical miles up from the current 10 and return dozens of fishing boats its naval forces confiscated lately.
The Hamas Movement on its part would commit to prevent the launch of airborne firebombs into Israeli territory and ensure protesters who rally on the border maintain peaceful demonstrations. Israel according to Haaretz said it would not use live fire against protesters.
