Netanyahu heads to Chad to normalize ties after nearly 50 years

Sunday 20-January-2019

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu landed in Chad Sunday morning for a half-day trip during which he is expected to announce the renewal of diplomatic ties with the African Muslim-majority nation.

At the presidential palace in N’Djamena the country’s capital city Netanyahu is set to hold two meetings with Chad’s President Idriss Déby — a one-on-one meeting and one with their expanded staff.

Netanyahu and Déby are expected to issue a formal declaration about the reestablishment of diplomatic relations which were severed 47 years ago.

The visit makes part of an intense drive by Netanyahu to expand Israel’s diplomatic reach amid increasing calls to boycott the Israeli occupation economically culturally and politically.
.
The Republic of Chad cut diplomatic ties with Israel on November 28 1972 at the behest of Libya’s overthrown President Muammar Ghaddafi.

Nearly 15 million people live in Chad today 55 percent of them Muslim. About 40% are Christian.
