Friday 10-March-2023

Dozens of pro-Palestine activists held a protest vigil in Rome in protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the country on Thursday.

Peace activists Italian political and trade union figures and members of the Palestinian community in Italy have participated in the event.

Palestinian flags and banners denouncing the visit and calling for an end to the economic and military cooperation between Italy and Israel were raised during the vigil.

Earlier Thursday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Chigi Palace the latter’s official residence.

During the meeting Netanyahu expressed a desire to expand economic relations with Italy.

He also asked his Italian counterpart to recognize Jerusalem as the Jewish state’s capital during his three-day visit to Rome.

“I believe the time has come for Rome to recognize Jerusalem as the ancestral capital of the Jewish people for three thousand years as the United States did with a gesture of great friendship” Netanyahu said.
