UNRWA commissioner-general Philippe Lazzarini has warned that the refugee agency has been in a difficult financial situation since 2012 highlighting its need for a sustainable system of funding.
In recent press remarks to Saudi Arabia’s Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper Lazzarini talked about the impacts of several political events around the world on the agency’s performance and activity as well as about the failure of donors to fulfill their financial obligations towards the agency.
The UN official explained that UNRWA appealed recently for $1.6 billion in funding in order to cover its main programs and operations especially in the fields of health and education in 2023.
He expressed his belief that the establishment of a sustainable model of funding for UNRWA is very important in order to have a predictable long-term and regular source of funding.
