Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi stressed the need for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees – UNRWA to fully implement its UN mandate and provide vital services to Palestinian refugees.
Safadi indicated during his meeting on Sunday with the Agency’s Commissioner-General Philip Lazzarini that “providing these services is the exclusive responsibility of the Agency under its UN mandate and that its powers and responsibilities are not subject to delegation.”
He stressed “the importance of providing the necessary financial support to the Agency to enable it to provide vital services to refugees in the sectors of education health relief and other services to about 5.7 million Palestinian refugees registered with it in Syria Lebanon Jordan the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
The official Jordanian news agency Petra stated that “Al-Safadi discussed with Lazzarini the efforts made to mobilize support for the agency” stressing the Kingdom of Jordan’s continued work with international and regional partners to provide the support the agency needs.
Lazzarini praised the Kingdom’s continuous efforts to mobilize political and financial support for the Agency stressing the importance of the international community continuing to fulfill its financial obligations towards the Agency.
