71 Palestinians injured in Israeli attack on martyr’s funeral

Dozens of Palestinians were injured after Israeli police forces violently attacked the funeral of the martyr Waleed Shareef on Monday evening in Occupied Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said 71 Palestinians were wounded by rubber bullets stun grenades and tear-gas bombs. Thirteen people were moved to hospital including two with eye injuries it added.

The clashes erupted when Israeli police fired tear-gas bombs at Palestinian mourners at Mujahideen cemetery.

A journalist was also injured while covering the events.

Israeli police also sprayed skunk water to suppress the mourners local sources reported.

At least 16 Palestinians were detained during the attack.

Thousands of mourners marched in the funeral procession of Waleed Shareef who was pronounced dead on Saturday of injuries he sustained last month by Israeli forces.

Shareef suffered a serious head injury on April 22 when Israeli police violently attacked Palestinian worshipers at al-Aqsa Mosque.

Mourners took Shareef’s body for prayers at the al-Aqsa Mosque before proceeding to a cemetery outside the Old City. “With our souls and blood we will redeem you martyr” the crowd chanted.

The attack came just days after police pushed and beat mourners at the funeral of Shireen Abu Akleh a well-known Al-Jazeera journalist who was killed last Wednesday while reporting an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank.

Commenting on the incident Hamas Movement said that the Israeli attack on mourners at Waleed Shareef’s funeral confirms “the Zionist terrorism and sadism that violates all international laws and norms.”

Such attack will be met with more steadfastness defiance and open confrontation the group added.

Hamas also hailed the Palestinian masses who participated in Shareef’s funeral despite the Israeli restrictions and attacks.
