Head of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haneyya phoned on Wednesday director of Al Jazeera office in Palestine Walid al-Omari and offered his deep condolences over the martyrdom of correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh.
In press remarks Haneyya described Abu Akleh as “the martyr who bore witness to the most atrocious occupation in contemporary history.”
He added that the name of Abu Akleh would be engraved in the Palestinian people’s memory until the removal of the Israeli occupation from the land of Palestine.
Describing them as “the guardians of the truth” Haneyya expressed his confidence that Palestinian journalists and media figures would “tread the same path that Shireen and other martyred journalists had trekked.”
Abu Akleh a longtime Al Jazeera correspondent was shot in the head while covering an Israeli army raid in Jenin refugee camp on Wednesday morning.
Al Jazeera news network and the Palestinian health ministry blamed the Israeli occupation forces for her death.
