Palestinian cancer-stricken prisoner launches hunger strike

The Palestinian cancer-stricken prisoner Abd al-Basit Ma’tan has started on Monday a hunger strike in protest against his administrative detention in Israeli jails without trial or charge.

Ma’tan who suffers from colorectal cancer has been held in Israeli jails since his detention on October 25 2021 without charge or trial for renewed periods of time.

Ma’tan a father of four holds a master’s degree in democracy and human rights and served as the Director-General of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office in the Gaza government.

His wife Zubeida Ma’tan affirmed that her husband didn’t receive any medical treatment since his detention despite his serious health condition.

She pointed out that he suffers from severe chest and lung pains warning of further health deterioration.

To date there are at least 500 Palestinian administrative detainees held in Israeli prisons and detention facilities.

Over 700 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails are in dire need of medical attention 170 of whom are in critical condition.
