Palestinian shot dead by Israeli gunfire

Friday 31-December-2021

A Palestinian young man was shot and killed on Friday morning after Israeli occupation forces (IOF) opened fire at him near Salfit in the north of the West Bank.

Israeli media sources claimed that the IOF soldiers opened fire at a Palestinian young man for allegedly trying to carry out a stabbing attack near the illegal Ariel settlement.

The IOF claimed that a soldier was seriously injured in the incident.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed the fatal shooting of the Palestinian young man who was later identified as Amir Atef Rayan from Qarawat Bani Hassan town in Salfit.

Rayyan’s body was evacuated by an Israeli ambulance to a hospital where the body is still withheld and not handed over to his family.

The IOF soldiers were deployed in large numbers in the area following the incident.

The incident came as the West Bank has been witnessing an escalation of settler attacks against several Palestinian villages where Israeli forces did not intervene to stop the attacks in most cases and often actively joined in.

Last Saturday 247 Palestinians were injured following an attack by the IOF and extremist settlers on the village of Burqa to the north of Nablus in the West Bank according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that from January to November 2021 Israeli settlers carried out 427 attacks in the West Bank including Occupied Jerusalem.

There are more than 300 illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank which Israel occupied in 1967. More than 666000 Jewish settlers make life more difficult for Palestinians living under the occupation.
