The Palestinian health ministry on Sunday reported five new deaths associated with COVID-19 (coronavirus) 237 new positive tests and 372 recoveries in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip during the last 24 hours.
According to the ministry’s daily report two of the victims who died of the virus are from the West Bank and three others from Gaza.
Moreover 55 critically ill COVID-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units and 12 of them have been placed on ventilators.
An additional 95 patients are also receiving medical care in hospitals and special COVID-19 treatment centers in the West Bank.
97.8 percent of the total cases have recovered from the disease while the rate of active cases has reached 1.2 percent and the rate of deaths is 1.0 percent of the total cases according to data updated today by the ministry.
In a related context the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Saturday extended the anti-coronavirus state of emergency for another month despite a notable decrease in COVID-19 cases and fatalities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
In a decree issued by PA chief Mahmoud Abbas the state of emergency was extended effective immediately to combat the spread of the virus according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The PA state of emergency was first issued in March 2020 after the discovery of the first coronavirus cases in the Palestinian territories and has been extended every month since then.
According to WAFA Abbas called on the competent authorities to take all the necessary measures to confront the risks resulting from coronavirus protect public health and maintain security and stability.
