Schmale apologizes for remarks calls for probing Israel’s actions

Thursday 27-May-2021

UNRWA operations director Matthias Schmale has apologized for comments he made to Israeli TV in which he said that the Israeli military strikes on the Gaza Strip appeared to be “precise.”

In Twitter remarks Schmale stated that the Israeli army did not abide by the international law during its last war on Gaza and killed dozens of civilians calling for international investigation and accountability.

“Killing more than 200 civilians including innocent women and children is not acting within laws of war. There must be independent investigation and accountability for those actions” he said on Twitter.

“I deeply regret that my comments about the precision of IDF strikes are being misused to justify what cannot be justified. Killing children breaks the rules of war and must be independently investigated. There must not be impunity” the UNRWA chief added.

“The terror from the sky that we have just experienced amounts to a form of collective punishment of the civilian population. This must never happen again” he said.

Schmale’s interview last Sunday with Channel 12 prompted outrage from the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian factions and parties which accused him of exonerating Israel from the massacring and injuring of civilians and the vicious destruction of homes in its 11-day aggression against Gaza.
