Jewish settlers stormed on Tuesday morning the archaeological area in Sebastia town northwest of Nablus under the protection of the Israeli occupation forces (IOF).
Muhammad Azem the mayor of Sebastia said in a press statement that IOF soldiers closed the archaeological site and deployed in the place since the early morning hours to secure the storming of settlers and protect them.
The IOF fired tear gas canisters at a number of Palestinian young men who tried to approach the area according to Azem.
Sebastia is located 12 kilometers northwest of Nablus. It is a very old town that had a prosperous civilization that spanned more than 3000 years.
The town is the largest archaeological site in Palestine and has a special religious status.
Archeologists affirmed that the Canaanites had established their civilization four thousand years ago in that town.
Sebastia’s residents seek to place it on the world tourism map to guarantee its protection from Israeli attempts to take control of it.
