Prisoner Maher Al-Akhras continues his open-ended hunger strike for the 77th consecutive day Sunday protesting his administrative detention amid the deterioration of his health condition that entered the stage of extreme danger.
Qadri Abu Bakr the head of the Prisoners and Ex-prisoners Affairs Authority stated that Akhras is in a very dangerous health condition.
Abu Bakr explained to Voice of Palestine radio station on Sunday morning that the Israeli administration of Kaplan hospital had transferred Akhras to another section after discovering an infection with the coronavirus in a room next to him.
Bakr expected that the coming days will be decisive for Akhras’s demands as well as for his health condition. He indicates that Akhras suffers from a weak immunity system his vital organs began to lose some functions and he cannot move while the prison administration is procrastinating in ending his administrative detention.
The Islamic Jihad Movement’s prisoners leadership had warned in a statement on Saturday evening that Akhras’s health condition indicated that there is an Israeli decision to kill him after they did everything they can to discourage him from continuing his strike.
It added “We have declared a state of full alert and we will not allow prisoners to be murdered. We also consider murdering any mujahid in this sadistic manner as crossing the red lines and the prison authorities must be well aware of the consequences of their decision.”
Akhras who hails from Silat al-Dhahr in Jenin province refused an offer by the Israeli occupation authorities to complete his current period of administrative detention and insisted on his immediate release.
Last Wednesday his wife announced a hunger strike and sit-in outside Kaplan Hospital in support of her husband in his fight and calling for his immediate release.
