Palestinian refugees suffer from difficult living conditions in Homs

Friday 14-April-2023

A very difficult living condition is experienced by Palestinian refugees in the Al-Aedin camp in the Syrian city of Homs. The situation has gone far worse due to the socio-economic crises.

Speaking to the PIC reporter local residents have launched a cry for help over the dire socio-economic conditions they have been made to endure due to the price leap food shortages and the bad weather conditions rocking the region.

Shopkeepers have also spoken out against the heavy losses inflicted by the high unemployment rates and decline in the refugees’ purchasing power.

The situation has gone far worse due to the refugees’ inability to secure their basic human needs as Syria’s national currency the Syrian pound (SYP) dropped to a historic low.

The refugees urged UNRWA and concerned parties to assume their duties as regards the crises wrought on the camp.

According to the refugee Abdullah Al-Mallah more than two-thirds of the camp’s inhabitants depend on money sent home by their relatives who live abroad. However with prices rising this is no longer sufficient.

He pointed out that the collapse of the pound has driven up the price of goods and aggravated hardship as Palestinian refugees struggle to buy food.

For her part the refugee Um Abdullah said that the residents hardly provide the basic requirements of life describing the situation as extremely tragic.

She emphasized that despite their challenging living circumstances they didn’t lose sight of their original cause Palestine.

She said “We are closely monitoring the developments at the Aqsa Mosque.”

According to UNRWA estimates almost 90 percent of Palestinian refugees in Syria are below the poverty line.
