China’s foreign minister Wang Yi has said that Israel has gone too far in responding to last week’s surprise attack by Hamas China’s official news agency reported.
&ldquoIsrael’s actions have gone beyond the scope of self-defense. It should heed the calls of the international community and the UN secretary-general and avoid collective punishment of the people of Gaza&rdquo Wang told Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud over the phone on Saturday.
Wang also stressed the need for all parties to avoid taking any action that would escalate the situation.
Wang Yi also held a phone conversation on the same day with US secretary of state Antony Blinken on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict according to Xinhua News Agency.
Wang warned that &ldquothe Palestinian-Israeli conflict is escalating continuously and is at the risk of losing control.&rdquo
&ldquoChina opposes all acts that harm civilians and condemns any violation of the international law&rdquo Wang said.
&ldquoChina believes that safeguarding one’s own security should not come at the cost of harming innocent civilians&rdquo the Chinese foreign minister said.
&ldquoCurrently the immediate priorities are to seek a ceasefire and de-escalate tensions so as to avoid exacerbating the humanitarian crisis&rdquo he added.
