Classes in Najah University to resume after initiative from Islamic bloc

Saturday 2-December-2006

Classes in the Najah University are scheduled to resume Saturday after three days of suspension at the backdrop of threats made by armed groups affiliated with Fatah faction to disrupt classes if the Islamic bloc that won the elections celebrates the victory.

Leaders of the Islamic bloc academic wing of Hamas Movement that won the University’s student council’s elections met with the University officials and  discussed a number of measures with it that prompted the University’s administration to announce the resumption of classes.

Mohammed Jaradat the bloc’s candidate to chair the council said his bloc asked the University board to affirm the right of the wining bloc to celebrate the victory before the bloc willingly gives up the right for this academic year.

In return the University panel pledges to deny all academic blocs the right to celebrate their respective victories in the elections as a matter of fairness.

The bloc’s initiative also calls on the University administration to ban carrying guns inside the University campus to enact a resolution preserving the right of the winning bloc to celebrate the victory it accomplishes in the next elections and to write it down as a law in the University’s constitution.

The Islamic bloc and the Shabiba bloc the academic wing of Fatah reaped the same number of the council’s seats; but Hamas superseded Fatah by tens of votes deeming it the winner.

However the bloc as part of the initiative and as a display of goodwill toward other blocs suggested the formation of a unity student council of the University that all winning blocs would chair on alternative basis; said a senior member of the Islamic bloc.

The University panel on their part hailed the praiseworthy “prudence and flexibility” displayed by the Islamic bloc and called on all students to respect rules and regulations of the University which is the biggest University in Palestine.
