IOA closes down Rafah crossing following Zahhar’s return

Wednesday 29-November-2006

The Israeli occupation authority (IOA) on Wednesday closed down the Rafah terminal thus blocking anew the travel of Palestinians in and out of the Gaza Strip contrary to a previous agreement of opening it for two days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Hebrew radio said that the decision was relayed to the European team of observers hinting that the closure was due to the return of PA foreign minister Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zahhar to Gaza from a foreign tour with cash money worth around 40 million dollars.

The broadcast said that Zahhar collected the money during his recent tour of a number of Arab and Islamic countries.

A spokesperson for the European mission commenting on the IOA decision in apparent protest over Zahhar’s move said they (observers) could not obstruct the return of Zahhar with the cash money. She said that the observers could only file a complaint with the Palestinian side over that matter.
