Wednesday 22-November-2006

Damascus – PA foreign minister Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zahhar met Tuesday afternoon with Syrian vice president Dr. Farouk Al-Shara’a in the latter’s office in the Syrian capital Damascus where they discussed hot issues in the Middle East including latest political development in the Palestinian arena.

According to a statement issued by the information department of the PA foreign ministry and a copy of which was obtained by the PIC the two officials discussed ways and means to put an end to the increasing IOF troops’ atrocities against the unarmed Palestinian people.

They also deliberated decisions taken by the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo and the OIC conference in Jeddah on breaking the unjust economic and political siege imposed on the PA government and the Palestinian people.

In this regard the two Arab officials stressed that immediate mechanisms to activate those decisions must be taken to implement them and make them effective.

Zahhar further briefed Shara’a on the ongoing inter-Palestinian dialogue pertaining to the formation of a unity government talking about a number of obstacles that the parties were still attempting to overcome before announcing the coalition government.

Case of captured IOF serviceman Gilad Shalit was also on the table of discussions of the two foreign ministers as Zahhar affirmed that the case of Shalit must be settled within the framework of the demands set by the soldier’s captors namely to release Palestinian female children and sick inmates in Israeli jails among other humanitarian demands.
