The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has affirmed that the health condition of cancer-stricken prisoner Walid Daqqa who has been in jail for 37 years is still extremely difficult and critical “which entails making concerted efforts to save his life and have him released.”
In a statement on Saturday spokesman for the Commission Hasan Abed Rabbo accused the Israeli occupation authority of trying to slowly kill prisoner Daqqa through persisting in ignoring the seriousness of his health condition and refusing any initiative calling for his release.
He pointed out that Daqqa is exposed to slow killing and medical neglect similar to Nasser Abu Hamid who died at Assaf Harofeh Hospital last year.
He stressed the need for making more efforts to have Daqqa released and ensure his access to proper medical treatment outside Israeli prisons to save his life.
Last April prisoner Daqqa underwent lung surgery at the Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon following a sharp decline in his condition. A large part of his right lung was removed.
Daqqa is a Palestinian writer and activist who has been in Israeli jails since 1986.
He was diagnosed last year with myelofibrosis – a rare form of bone marrow cancer that disrupts the body’s normal production of blood cells.
