Jordan warns of UNRWA’s failure to fulfill its mandate

Saturday 3-June-2023

Jordan’s representative to the UN Mahmoud al-Hamoud has warned of serious repercussions resulting from UNRWA’s failure to meet its financial needs and fulfill its mandate towards Palestinian refugees.

Hamoud made his remarks during a meeting held on Friday at the UN headquarters by the Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly for the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to UNRWA.

The Jordanian ambassador said that “UNRWA’s role will remain pivotal and indispensable especially in light of the absence of a political horizon and the exacerbation of the complex economic challenges facing the Palestinian people and refugees.”

He also said that the failure to address UNRWA’s financial deficit would have catastrophic impacts on the humanitarian conditions of the Palestinian refugees in particular and the security and stability of the region as a whole.

He affirmed that Jordan would continue to work and coordinate with regional and international partners to mobilize political and financial support for UNRWA to enable it to continue performing its tasks in accordance with its UN mandate.
