Palestinians in Syria suffer from deteriorating economic conditions

Monday 12-June-2023

Spokesman for the Action Group for Palestinians of Syria (AGPS) Fayez Abu Eid has said that Palestinian refugees in Syria live under harsh circumstances due to the UNRWA financial crisis.

Abu Eid told the PIC on Monday that Palestinian refugees in Syria have been suffering from deteriorating economic conditions following the earthquake that hit northern Syria along with the unprecedented devaluation in the Syrian pound.

“Palestinian refugees still suffer from the effects of the earthquake” Abu Eid stressed pointing out that refugees received assistance at the time of the crisis yet the aids are no longer available.

Abu Eid affirmed that the UNRWA does not recognize Palestinian refugees not living in its areas of operations.

He underlined that Palestinian refugees used to live in 15 camps in Syria three of which had been destroyed adding that more than 4000 refugees in Syria have been martyred since the Syrian civil war started more than ten years ago and thousand others have been displaced.

Last January UNRWA launched an appeal for US$ 1.2 billion US$ 848 million of which to be allocated for core services including health and education while the other goes for emergency operations in the occupied Palestinian territory Jordan Syria and Lebanon.
