Egypt’s Al-Azhar Al-Sharif has condemned Jewish settlers for burning copies of the Holy Quran after storming a mosque in Urif village to the south of the West Bank city of Nablus.
In a press statement on Saturday Al-Azhar Al-Sharif an Islamic scientific body and the largest religious institution in Egypt said that the international community’s inaction towards the repeated Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people constitutes unjustified complicity.
“Tearing up and burning copies of the Quran constitute a crime against humanity” Al-Azhar Al-Sharif stressed adding that such a crime is a grave violation of all the international laws and conventions that stipulate respect for religious sanctities and guarantee freedom of worship.
Al-Azhar Al-Sharif called on Arab and Muslim nations to adopt a unified stance towards the repeated Israeli crimes and to take binding measures to establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
