US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is leading a campaign to boycott a joint session of Congress for an address by Israeli President Isaac Herzog next Wednesday.
Omar said that she is &ldquoseeking to persuade members of Congress to boycott the Israeli president’s speech which comes two weeks after the Jenin crime and after the release of the murderer of the slain Palestinian Iyad al-Hallaq.&rdquo
Omar also expected that the move could be followed by other politicians in the country.
“Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s address comes on behalf of the most right-wing government in Israel’s history at a time when the government is openly promising to “crush” Palestinian hopes of statehood&mdashessentially putting a nail in the coffin of peace and a two-state solution” she added.
Omar is one of the most outspoken critics of Israel and the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians.
In 2019 she and a fellow progressive Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib D-Mich. were barred from entering Israel by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Earlier last week four progressive US lawmakers announced their intentions to boycott Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s address in protest against Israeli crimes against Palestinians.
