A high-level Hamas delegation led by head of the political bureau Ismail Haneyya met on Sunday with officials of the Palestinian factions ahead of the meeting of the general secretaries which kicked off today morning in the Egyptian City of al-Alamein.
The delegation met with senior officials from the Fatah Movement the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine the Palestinian Initiative Movement and the Palestinian People’s Party.
The meeting was attended by senior Hamas officials including deputy head of the Movement Saleh al-Aruri Khalil al-Hayya Husam Badran Mousa Abu Marzouk Taher al-Nunu and Ali Baraka.
Later Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud Abbas chaired the meeting of the Palestinian factions&rsquo general secretaries which started in the morning in al-Alamein City while three factions already refused to attend it without the PA ending its political arrests in the occupied West Bank.
The participants in the meeting are expected to discuss the latest developments in the Palestinian arena and ways to restore national unity in light of the great challenges facing the Palestinian cause.
In a statement the Hamas Movement has said that the factional meeting in Egypt today should be an opportunity to reach a unified national position affirming that its leadership would make every effort for its success.
&ldquoHamas seizes any opportunity to engage in dialogue with other Palestinian parties in order to formulate a unified national position. It has always taken steps to achieve national unity and serve the Palestinian cause” Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem said on Sunday.
&ldquoHamas’s central goal is see the Palestinians able to formulate a unified plan to confront the occupation state’s crimes and violations&rdquo Qasem added.
