Gaza loses 80 percent of electricity power plant to shut down soon

Sunday 8-October-2023

The embattled Gaza Strip will be plunged into complete darkness in the coming days as its only power plant will not be able to provide electricity according to the daily supply schedule.

During a news conference held at Shifa Hospital on Sunday the Palestinian power authority said that the fuel available to operate the power plant would be sufficient until next Tuesday warning that an imminent humanitarian catastrophe would happen if it was forced it to shut down the turbines.

According to the power authority Gaza has lost 80 percent of its electricity because only three turbines of the power plant which produces an average of 65 megawatts are now working.

The power authority added that all the power lines feeding Gaza from Israeli lines in 1948 occupied Palestine stopped on Sunday after the Israeli occupation government decided to completely cut off the supply of electricity to Gaza following the massive resistance attacks on Israeli areas.

It appealed to the international community and human rights groups to intervene immediately to pressure the Israeli government to resume providing Gaza with its power and fuel needs in order to avoid the occurrence of a humanitarian crisis.
