UNRWA commissioner-general Philippe Lazzarini has warned of serious repercussions for the health and lives of Gaza’s civilian population as they are running out of potable water as a result of the ongoing Israeli siege and military attacks.
&ldquoIn fact Gaza is being strangled and it seems that the world right now has lost its humanity&rdquo Lazzarini told a news conference last Sunday.
&ldquoIf we look at the issue of water &ndash we all know water is life – Gaza is running out of water and Gaza is running out of life. Soon I believe with this there will be no food or medicine either&rdquo the UNRWA chief said.
&ldquoThere is not one drop of water not one grain of wheat not a liter of fuel that has been allowed into the Gaza Strip for the last eight days&rdquo he added.
Gaza normally gets its water supplies from a combination of sources including a pipeline from Israel desalination plants on the Mediterranean Sea and wells. Those supplies were slashed when Israel cut off water along with the fuel and electricity that power water and sewage plants.
