UNRWA: 70% of martyrs in Gaza are women and children

Tuesday 31-October-2023

United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) declared that 70% of the Palestinian martyrs killed in Israeli aggressive attacks in Gaza Strip over the past three weeks are children and women.

Philippe Lazzarini Commissioner General of the UNRWA in a speech delivered Monday evening before UN Security Council’s urgent meeting warned that there is no safe place in Gaza due to “Israeli intense bombardment of the Strip.”

Lazzarini stressed that the Israeli army targeted churches mosques hospitals and UNRWA facilities including those that shelter displaced people as many people have been killed and injured even in places protected by international humanitarian law.

“The current siege imposed on Gaza is collective punishment” he said adding that basic services are failing after three weeks of complete siege with medicine food water and fuel becoming scarce and the streets overflowing with sewage.

The UN organization reported on 29 October that almost 3400 children were killed and 6300 children were injured in Gaza in just three weeks as a result of the Israeli ongoing aggression.

The Israeli relentless airstrikes have also led to the destruction of no less than 221 schools and 177000 houses in the besieged enclave.

The UNRWA announced earlier on Monday the martyrdom of 63 of its employees in the Gaza Strip since October 7.

The UN body called on Israel to halt targeting its workers in Gaza pointing out that its employees have been continuing their work to help the people in need in Gaza despite being subject to serious risks.

The Israeli army has been launching a brutal aggression on the Gaza Strip for 25 consecutive days claiming the lives of 8525 people and injuring 22000 others according to Palestinian Ministry of Health.
