UNRWA calls on Washington to immediately cease fire in Gaza

Thursday 9-November-2023

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini called for a ceasefire in Gaza an end to the siege imposed on Gaza and allowing humanitarian aid to flow into the Strip without restrictions.

In a statement on Thursday Lazzarini called on US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. He emphasized that an immediate ceasefire could prevent a catastrophe stating that the limited aid reaching Gaza through the Rafah crossing is far less than what is required.

He said: “We have lost 99 of our colleagues in Gaza since October 7 in Israeli attacks.”

The UNRWA Commissioner-General noted that 700000 people are now living in about 150 UNRWA buildings throughout the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile Hisham Mahanna spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza said there is no safe place in Gaza.

He pointed out that thousands of civilians in the northern part of Gaza are walking to the south of the Strip lacking water medicine and basic necessities.

Mahanna called for an immediate cessation of hostilities so that the people of Gaza can regain their ability to continue living.

For the past 34 days Israeli occupation forces have been waging a bloody war on Gaza during which residential neighborhoods have been destroyed and thousands of airstrikes have resulted in 40000 deaths injuries and missing persons under the rubble.
