Hamas Movement on Saturday denounced the US veto of UN Security Council’s demand for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian purposes.

Member of Hamas’s political bureau Ezzat Al-Resheq said in a press statement on Telegram: “We condemn in the strongest terms Washington’s use of the veto right against the UN Security Council’s demand for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza”.

Al-Resheq stressed that the US obstruction of a ceasefire resolution indicates direct complicity in the Israeli killing of civilians and carrying out spiraling carnages and ethnic cleansing in Gaza, describing the US position as inhumane and immoral.

The UN Security Council on Friday held an emergency session to vote on a draft resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza which was put forward by the United Arab Emirates with the participation of 80 states including Turkiye.

The US vetoed the draft resolution even though it was backed by the vast majority of its members. The vote left Washington diplomatically isolated on the council as 13 out of 15 members voted in favor of the draft resolution, while Britain abstained.

The draft resolution reiterated its call on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, especially with regard to the protection of civilians.

It also demanded an immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and to guarantee the entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged Gaza Strip.
