In an official statement on Sunday, Secretary-General of Lebanon’s Council of Ministers, Mahmoud Mekkiya, announced that Prime Minister Najib Mikati made the decision in response to a global call for a strike “in solidarity with Gaza and the Palestinian people, including our fellow citizens in Gaza and the border villages of Lebanon.”
The Beirut Engineers’ Syndicate also confirmed the closure of its main headquarters in the Lebanese capital Beirut, along with its branch offices across various regions on Monday.
The Syndicate announced in a statement “its solidarity with the Palestinian People in Gaza and occupied Palestinian territories who remain steadfast in the face of the Israeli brutal aggression.”
Broad Jordanian participation
Various sectors and industries in Jordan began their general strike on Monday in support of Gaza and in condemnation of the genocidal war against Palestinians living in the blockaded Gaza Strip.
Private companies, various labor unions, institutions, and private schools participated in the strike.
Jordan Medical Association called on its members to pause work for two hours in all workplaces, after 12:00 p.m., with the exception of emergency departments.
The general strike in Jordan came as a response to a global activism and widespread calls by activists on social media for a global strike under the hashtag (#StrikeForGaza) in solidarity with the people of Gaza and to put pressure on the international community to halt Israeli crimes against civilians.
General strike in Ramallah and Al-Bireh
A comprehensive strike prevailed on Monday across the occupied West Bank as part of the global activism calling for a general strike for the sake of Gaza in support of the Palestinian people and in protest against Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, for 66 consecutive days.
The strike paralyzed all aspects of life in the West bank that was launched by National and Islamic forces in the northern governorates in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza who have been under relentless attacks for 66 days.
Transportation was disrupted in all provinces of the West Bank, while institutions, universities, banks, schools, ministries, and shops shut their doors, and the local stock market was suspended as well, amid popular calls for continuing pro-Gaza events and confrontations with Israeli occupation forces in all regions, streets, and squares.
The strike was also witnessed in various neighborhoods in Occupied Jerusalem.
Last Saturday, National and Islamic forces and activists in the West Bank and Jerusalem have called for participation in the global strike on Monday, December 11, in rejection of the Israeli displacement plans in Gaza and in condemnation of the American bias towards Israel.
The forces stated that the world refuses the blatant US support for the occupation state in its war against our children and people and rejects the veto that aborted a Security Council resolution to stop the war in Gaza.
Nearly 18,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 49,200 others injured in Israel’s relentless air and ground attacks on the enclave since October 7.
