European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said, during his visit to the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Saturday, that it was imperative to avoid a regional escalation in the Middle East, and warned Israel that “nobody will win from a regional conflict.” He pointed out that he discussed with Lebanese officials the mechanism of enforcing UN Resolution 1701.
Borrell stressed during a joint press conference with Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Habib that the Gaza Strip cannot be separated from the West Bank, which is part of the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, asserting that the two-state solution is the only option that achieves security and stability for Israel, and that 90% of UN countries support the two-state solution.
Borrell discussed with Lebanese officials the situation on the Israeli-Lebanese border, and the importance of avoiding regional escalation and creating suitable conditions to achieve just peace in the region.
Upon his arrival in Beirut, Borrell wrote on his X account, “I am glad to return to Lebanon to demonstrate our support during these difficult times.”
“Important meetings will be held about the impact of the Gaza war on Lebanon and the region. The priority is to avoid regional escalation and advance diplomatic efforts to create the conditions that allow for a just and lasting peace between Israel and Palestine and in the region.”
