The Israeli occupation has arrested a total of 50 Palestinian journalists since the start of its war on the Gaza Strip on October 7 and is currently holding 35, the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) revealed.
The PPS pointed out that 20 journalists are held under administrative detention policy, while the rest were accused of inciting violence on social media.
The Israeli occupation earlier released journalist Diaa Al-Kahlot, who was arrested in December during the Israeli ground invasion of Gaza along with dozens of citizens.
Diaa al-Kahlot, reporter for the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed news site, was identified in a video posted by an Israeli soldier in the north of the Gaza Strip on December 7. Al-Kahlot was seen kneeling in the street in the middle of a group of half-naked detainees.
The administrative detention of journalist Ikhlas Sawalha, from Jenin, was renewed for 6 months, the PPS added.
Palestinian detainees, including journalists, who were detained after October 7 were subjected to severe torture and ill-treatment, the PPS said.
This unprecedented wave of arrests and detentions, while the war continues in the Gaza Strip, has clearly been carried out with the deliberate aim of silencing the Palestinian media.
