The UN Security Council has scheduled a meeting on Wednesday to follow up on the ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel regarding its genocidal war in Gaza, at the request of Algeria.

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Friday evening, that it “followed with interest the ICJ’s decision on the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel’s commission of genocide in Gaza.”

“The Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations received instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to submit a request to hold a Security Council meeting as soon as possible, in order to activate the ruling of the ICJ regarding the temporary ruling measures imposed on the Israeli occupation,” the Algerian Foreign Ministry added.

The spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, said on Friday that António Guterres, will immediately refer the notification of the interim measures of the ICJ to the UN Security Council.

Dujarric added in a press conference that Guterres asserted that the decisions of the ICJ are binding, and he is sure that all parties will abide by them in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the system under which the court was established.

He also explained that the position of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the independence of the ICJ is clear, saying he had called for a ceasefire for humanitarian purposes and respect for international humanitarian law. He also called for the release of the hostages, he added.

The ICJ ordered Israel to take measures to prevent genocide in the Gaza Strip and any direct incitement to it. It has also rejected the Israeli request to dismiss the lawsuit brought by South Africa.
