Islamic Jihad: ICJ measures do not meet Palestinian expectations

Islamic Jihad Movement denounced on Friday what it called “the reluctance of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to issue a clear decision binding the Israeli occupation to an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.”

The Movement said in a statement that “despite the ICJ’s temporary measures demanding Israel to stop all actions that lead to killing, the measures did not live up to the expectations of the Palestinian people who are demanding full cessation to the aggression and ending the genocide in Gaza.”

“We denounce the court’s reluctance to issue a clear decision that compels Israel to enforce an immediate ceasefire, while implicitly acknowledges that Israel is committing genocide against our people in Gaza,” the Movement said.

The Movement’s statement also pointed out that “the court’s reluctance to request an immediate halt to the aggression is evidence of global evil forces controlling global legal systems for their own interests at the expense of the oppressed.”

On the other hand, the Movement praised “the efforts made by the South African government to expose the Israeli Zionist crimes, and to break the global silence regarding the ongoing genocidal war against our people.”

Earlier on Friday, the ICJ, the UN top judicial body, ruled that Israel must take all measures within its power to prevent the commission of all acts within the scope of Article II of the Genocide Convention.

The ICJ ordered Israel to take measures to ensure that its soldiers and citizens adhere to the United Nations Convention on the Prevention of Genocide and must submit a report within a month to show how it is adhering to the instructions.

The ICJ stated that “Israel must avoid everything related to killing, assault, and destruction against the residents of Gaza, and to ensure the immediate provision of urgent humanitarian needs in the Strip.”

However, the Court has no means to enforce the law, and it is not clear how Israel will respond to the decision.
