The governments of Scotland and Ireland announced on Sunday their intention to continue their funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Scottish Prime Minister Hamzah Yousef said, on his X account, “The Scottish government will not stop or withdraw aid provided to UNRWA, stressing “the need for continuing to fund the UN agency to ensure that aid reaches the residents of Gaza.”
“We previously provided as much as we could within our financial constraints, and we will always strive to make more efforts as much as we can. We urge others to persist in providing assistance to the people of Gaza”, he added.
For his part, Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin confirmed that Ireland “has no intention to stop funding the vital work carried out by UNRWA in the Gaza Strip.”
On his X account, Martin said that his country “provided 18 million euros to UNRWA last year, and will continue its support for the UN agency this year as well.”
“UNRWA provides life-saving assistance to 2.3 million people. More than 100 of its employees were killed in the past four months”, he highlighted.
Since October 7, the Israeli occupation forces have been waging a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip with US and European support, leading to the killing of 26,422 Palestinians, wounding 65,87 others, and the forced displacement of more than 85 percent of the Strip’s population.
