The Ansarullah (Houthi) group’s military forces in Yemen said on Monday that they had fired missiles at a British ship in the Gulf of Aden, causing significant damage to it.
“Our naval forces have attacked the British ship, Rubymar, in the Gulf of Aden with a number of missiles,” military spokesman for the group Yehya Sarea said in a televised statement aired by al-Masirah satellite channel.
“As a result of the extensive damage the ship sustained, it is now at risk of potential sinking in the Gulf of Aden. During the operation, we made sure that the ship’s crew left it safely,” Sarea added.
“Our attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden will not stop unless the (Israeli) aggression against Gaza stops,” the spokesman said.
He also affirmed that his group had shot down a US (MQ9) drone off the port city of Hodeida.
Earlier in the day, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said in a statement posted on the social media platform X that the crew of the attacked vessel had abandoned the vessel, adding that “military authorities” rushed to the scene to assist.
The British maritime agency said the attack on the vessel occurred on Sunday within 35 nautical miles south of al-Makha, located south of Hodeida port city.
Ambrey, another British maritime security agency, confirmed that the attacked vessel was a British-registered bulk cargo vessel.
