International warnings: Gaza children are dying of hunger and thirst

Tuesday 19-March-2024

NEW YORK, (PIC)

International officials have cautioned that Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip, especially in northern regions, are at risk of dying of hunger and thirst, stressing the need for urgent action by the entire world to put an end to the imminent famine.

The Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Catherine Russell, said that the “Integrated Provisional Classification of Food Security (IPC) report, prepared by institutions affiliated with the United Nations, confirms her worst fears”.

Earlier, the IPC’s report, prepared by United Nations institutions on Monday, showed that 70 percent of the population of the northern Gaza Strip are facing “catastrophic hunger.”

For his part, the Chief Economist at the United Nations World Food Program, Arif Hussein, warned that death from starvation would be the fate of thousands of children if the program’s crews were unable to enter northern Gaza.

Speaking at a video conference interview with journalists at the United Nations about IPC’s report, Hussein said that the Program is about to declare famine in northern Gaza, demanding urgent, necessary measures to prevent the imminent famine.

Since October 7, the Israeli occupation army has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving tens of thousands of civilian victims, most of them children and women, in addition to a humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction of infrastructure.
