The Hamas Movement said on Monday that it had informed the mediators that it would uphold its original position and vision on a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, which it announced on March 14, affirming that the Israeli occupation government did not respond positively to its just demands in this regard.

In a statement, Hamas said that the Israeli government “did not respond to any of the basic demands of its people and their resistance, which call for a comprehensive ceasefire, withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the return of the displaced, and an exchange of prisoners.”

The Movement held Benjamin Netanyahu and his “extremist government” fully responsible for obstructing all the efforts to reach a ceasefire deal.

After 171 days of war in Gaza, the UN Security Council adopted on Monday a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire for the holy month of Ramadan respected by all parties and leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire.

The Security Council voted 14-0 in support of the resolution with the US abstaining.

Later, Hamas issued a statement, saying it “welcomes the UN Security Council’s call for an immediate ceasefire,” and stressing the need for reaching a permanent ceasefire that leads to the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and the return of the displaced to their homes.

“We also affirm our readiness to engage in an immediate prisoner exchange process that leads to the release of prisoners on both sides,” Hamas added.
