The Gaza Municipality issued a warning on Sunday about the dire consequences for the city’s environmental and health conditions should the Israeli occupation persist in preventing its workers from accessing the main waste dump in the “Juhr al-Dik” area east of the city.

In a statement, the municipality stated that since the start of the Israeli aggression on October 7, the Israeli occupation has made it impossible for its crews to reach the dump, resulting in a significant buildup of waste—roughly 90,000 tons—in the city’s streets.

According to the municipality, this “led to the proliferation of harmful insects and rodents and the worsening of environmental conditions and health conditions in the city.”

“Waste accumulated in the streets and public areas due to the destruction of 125 different-sized vehicles, mostly waste collection vehicles, and the fuel needed to provide the cleaning service running out several months ago.”

The Juhr al-Dik landfill, which receives approximately 1,000 tons of waste from Gaza City, the municipalities of al-Mughraqa, Wadi Gaza, Juhr al-Dik, and UNRWA, is the main and only landfill in the city qualified to receive waste from the city.
