Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced on Saturday that his country will join South Africa in its lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), on charges of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Boric said in a speech before lawmakers, that his government decided to “join the lawsuit submitted by South Africa before the ICJ, in accordance with the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.”

Late December 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the ICJ on the basis that it had violated the UN Genocide Convention (1948).

The court issued late January a preliminary ruling demanding Israel to take all measures possible to prevent any practices that could fall under the Genocide Convention.

The ICJ’s ruling demanded Israel to prevent and punish collective genocide, ensure aid flow into the Gaza Strip, and document genocide crimes committed by the Israeli occupation army in the Strip.

Last May, the court also issued an obligatory ruling against Israel to stop its military operation in Rafah, but Israel refused to comply with the decision.
