The Hamas Movement has said that the New York Times’ recent report on Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich’s recorded remarks about a plan to annex the West Bank has confirmed “the fascist tendencies of the extremist Israeli government.”

In a statement on Sunday, Hamas said that Smotrich’s remarks in the recording that was disclosed by the New York Times revealed the dangers that threaten the Palestinian people, their lands and holy sites in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Hamas called for necessarily confronting and thwarting such annexation and settlement plans “through standing behind the resistance option and combating this arrogant enemy until its removal from our land and holy sites.”

Hamas called on the international community to take urgent action in this regard and pressure the Israeli government to stop its criminal steps and violations against the Palestinian people and their land in the West Bank.

The Movement also called for holding Israeli leaders accountable for their crimes against the Palestinian people in the West Bank and their genocide in the Gaza Strip.

It urged the Palestinian masses in the West Bank to continue their struggle against the occupation, its forces and settlers and use all the resistance means to protect their land and end the occupation.

Smotrich was recently recorded telling settler supporters that his government is engaged in a clandestine plan to change the way Israel governs the West Bank, according to the New York Times on Friday that cited a recording of the far-right minister.

The New York Times said the recording was from an event held earlier in June, in which Smotrich told settlers that the goal was to prevent the West Bank from becoming part of a Palestinian state.
